Role: Instructional Designer & Video Developer
Tools Used: TechSmith Camtasia, Audio Editing Software
Deliverable: 2.5-minute microlearning video
Target Audience: Internal employees / New software users
(Note: Due to an active NDA, the course is unavailable for review)
The organization was launching a new, robust software application. Users needed to quickly understand how to navigate the primary dashboard to perform their daily tasks. The main instructional challenge was to prevent cognitive overload—software interfaces can be visually overwhelming, and users often struggle to know where to focus their attention when listening to a narrator explain new features.
The goal was to create a concise, engaging orientation video that rapidly accelerated time-to-competency without requiring a lengthy training manual.
I designed and developed a 2.5-minute microlearning video using Camtasia. To ensure high engagement and immediate comprehension, I anchored the development in Mayer’s Multimedia Principles, specifically focusing on the Signaling Principle to guide the learner's eye exactly where it needed to be at any given moment.
Brand Alignment & Engagement: The video opened with a dynamic entrance featuring the company logo and sliding animations. This established immediate professionalism and context, while upbeat, appropriately leveled background music maintained learner momentum.
Dual-Channel Processing: I synchronized a clear, professional voiceover with specific on-screen actions. By delivering the "what and why" through audio and the "where and how" through visuals, I minimized extraneous cognitive load.
Strategic Visual Signaling: To prevent users from getting lost on the complex dashboard, I heavily utilized Camtasia's visual callouts:
Sketched Boxes & Shapes: Used to dynamically draw boundaries around specific menus or widgets right as the voiceover introduced them.
Pop-Ups & Sliding Animations: Employed to simulate user interactions and reveal drop-down menus or hidden features smoothly.
Color & Contrast: I intentionally used high-contrast colors for highlights and darkened the background (spotlight effect) during critical steps to force the viewer's attention to the targeted dashboard elements.
Storyboarding & Scripting: Drafted a concise script aimed at a 150-word-per-minute pace to keep the video strictly under 3 minutes. I mapped every sentence to a specific visual action on the dashboard.
Asset Capture: Recorded high-resolution screen captures of the anonymized User Interface (UI), ensuring smooth mouse movements using Snagit.
Editing & Synchronization: Built the video in Camtasia, layering the voiceover, background track (ducked during speaking parts), and video tracks.
Behavior & Animation Pass: Applied custom behaviors to the callouts so they entered and exited organically rather than appearing abruptly, making the viewing experience seamless.
The final 2.5-minute video provided a highly polished, zero-friction introduction to the new software. By using targeted visual cues rather than a static screen recording, learners could immediately map the auditory instructions to the visual interface, resulting in a smoother rollout and reduced "how-to" help desk tickets during the software's launch phase. This and all other products have completed the review/approval process and met the completion deadline.
